چکیده

In this paper, we review the contributions which MBE (molecular beam epitaxy) has made to the field of GMR (giant magnetoresistance) and interlayer exchange coupling in magnetic multilayers and sandwiches. A historical overview is given and a key advantage of MBE over alternative preparation techniques is emphasized: the ability to probe in situ the growth and structure of these materials. Recent work on surfactant-mediated growth of Co/Cu(lll) sandwiches and the resulting reduction of growth-induced defects are discussed. A comparison of results for multilayers grown via MBE and sputtering is made for several GMR materials systems. It is seen that these preparation techniques are complementary.

Mechanisms of inert gas impact induced interlayer mixing in metal multilayers grown by sputter deposition

Control of interfacial roughness and chemical mixing is critical in nanomaterials. For example, multilayers composed of ;20 Å conductive layer sandwiched between two ;50 Å ferromagnetic layers can exhibit giant magnetoresistance ~GMR!. This property has caused a tremendous recent increase in hard disk storage capacity, and can potentially result in a new generation of nonvolatile magnetic rando...

Enhanced Interlayer Exchange Coupling in Co/Fe/MgO/Fe(001)

We investigate the bilinear and biquadratic interlayer exchange coupling in Co/Fe/MgO/Fe(001). Samples are grown through molecular beam epitaxy and the interlayer exchange coupling is measured through magneto-optic Kerr effect along wedge samples. By varying the location of Fe impurities between the interface and middle of the MgO spacer, we find that the couplings are enhanced and are dependen...

Experimental studies of the non - collinear magnetic states in epitaxial FeAu multilayers

We have investigated the magnetic structure and coupling in epitaxial [Fe3/Au(0 0 1)N/(Fe1Au1)3/Au(0 0 1)N] 2 multilayers. Our system contains alternating (Fe1Au1)3 monoatomic stacks with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and 3 atomic layer (AL) thick Fe films (Fe3) with an in-plane easy magnetization axis, separated by an Au(0 0 1) spacer layer. Giant magnetoresistance and magnetization measur...

Interlayer perpendicular domain coupling between thin Fe films and garnet single-crystal underlayers

The magnetic behavior and domain structure of Fe films grown on yttrium–iron–garnet ~YIG! underlayers were studied to elucidate their interlayer coupling, as a function of the Fe layer thickness, using magnetic force microscopy ~MFM! and magneto-optic Kerr effect ~MOKE!. The YIG layer, grown by liquid phase epitaxy on single crystal gadolinium–gallium–garnet ~GGG! substrates, showed a character...

Coexistence of glassy antiferromagnetism and giant magnetoresistance in Fe/Cr multilayer structures

Using temperature-dependent magnetoresistance and magnetization measurements on Fe/Cr multilayers that exhibit pronounced giant magnetoresistance (GMR), we have found evidence for the presence of a glassy antiferromagnetic phase. This phase reflects the influence of interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) at low temperature (To140 K) and is characterized by a field-independent glassy transition temp...
